Dr. Mercy Thuranira

Senior Lecturer
Dr Mercy Nkatha Thuranira is a self- motivated counselling psychologist with a specialty in career counselling and adolescent counselling. She holds a PhD in Counselling Psychology and Master of Education in Guidance and Counselling both from Egerton University, Bachelor of Education Arts from Kenyatta University. She has a wide teaching experience in secondary school and the university where by besides teaching she believes in mentoring students on maximum utilization of talents.
Dr Nkatha is a Senior Lecturer of Psychology at Meru University of Science and Technology as well the chairman of Department Education Arts. She specializes in teaching psychology courses and general administration of the department. Prior to this Dr Nkatha served as a lecturer in the Department of Counselling at Kenya Methodist University, whereby she trained counselling psychologist.
Her love for peace propelled her to join mediation. She is an accredited mediator with the Kenya Judiciary since 2017 and has successfully mediated several cases. Further, she offers her services to the community in different ways including serving as a member of Board of Management for several schools and taking leadership positions in church as well as preaching. She is a motivational speaker, conducts seminars and trainings on leadership peer counselling, parenting, retirement among others.
Her research interest is in career issues, behaviour and attitude modification. She has widely researched on how individuals can end up in appropriate careers and published papers on the same. Dr Nkatha is a fervent believer in utilization of individual power to succeed. In an effort to enhance understanding of this concept she has authored a book “You Mind Your Gold Mine” where she talks extensively about the human mind; it’s development; how to care for it and how parental intervention plays a role.
She attributes her success to adherence to strong values and beliefs that guide and motivate her. These includes spirituality, humility, integrity, team work, diligence and hard work. She instils into her clients and students virtues that will enable independence and fulfilment in life.
